Definition Of Application Letter

Application Letter also known as a cover letter, an application letter is a summary of your strongest and most relevant skills and abilities that will be expanded in your resume or selection criteria.

The Purpose of Writing Application Letter

The purpose of a job application or resume cover letter is to improve your chances of being called for an interview, by convincing the reader that you would be the best person for the job, is to initially assess whether or not you have the skills, qualities and attributes to perform the role.

Structure of Application Letter

1.      Heading: A letter of application should begin with both you and the employer's contact information (name, address, phone number, email) followed by the date).

2.      The Salutation

·         Dear Sir

·         Dear Madam

·         Dear Mr. Alvin

3.      Body of the letter

1.      Opening paragraph 

Contains the intention of the applicant in the form of the desired position according to the vacancies published/available

Example :

·         I am writing to apply for the.....

·         I wish to apply for the position as a ….

·         I am interested in applying for …. 

2.      Middle paragraph

Tell briefly about the experience/education/skills/advantages the applicant has

3.      Closing paragraph 

The part that contains the hope to get attention

Example

·         I hope my qualifications and working experiences could be your consideration and look forward to your reply.

·         I am very much willing to come over for a personal interview with you anytime during office hours

·         If you need any further information, you may contact me at 047.791.2991.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.

4.      Complimentary Close ( Salam Penutup)

Example:  as : Best / Sincerely / Sincerely yours / Faithfully / Respectfully yours, followed by your name.

5.      Signature(Tanda Tangan)


Expression/Setence

 ·   Use formal and polite language. Besides that, you also have to use the right tenses and according to the sentences you write.

 ·    For the part of the letter that describes the skills you have and the current situation, you can use the Simple Present Tense. Meanwhile, for the part of the letter that describes your past achievements or experiences, you can use the Simple Past Tense. 

How to write an Application Letter

  1. Research the company you're applying to and the specifications of the open position. 
  2. This letter should follow a professional format and include your name, your contact information, the date and the company's information.
  3. Open the letter with a clear statement about the position you are applying for. Mention the company by name. 
  4. In one or two impactful sentences, explain why you're the best fit for this job opening. 
  5. Mention the top qualifications that make you a good fit for the job.
  6. You've already explained why the company should want you. 
  7.  Thank the reader for reviewing your letter, reference your resume and any other attached documents and offer to provide additional information as needed.
